Need help understanding poem?

I read it as a portrait of a kid who's being raised by his mother after his father, who was always kind of wild, has taken off and disappeared from the boy's life. The father is now a bum, living in flophouses, and the speaker wonders if the boy will ever realize who his father is and find him.
